Arabic version: الولايات المتحدة تنهي الحصار البحري بعد اتفاق تاريخي مع إيران
The United States has officially lifted its naval blockade on Iran after both nations signed a significant deal aimed at ending the ongoing war in the Middle East. US Central Command confirmed the termination of the blockade, stating that some US vessels would remain in the general area, but the blockade itself has ceased.
According to BBC News, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei expressed his approval of the agreement, despite holding a differing perspective on the matter. Khamenei mentioned that he allowed the deal to proceed after receiving assurances from President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding the protection of Iranian rights. He criticized former President Trump, claiming that the deal was made out of desperation.
The deal encompasses 14 core points, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a commitment that Iran will never develop nuclear weapons. It also includes a $300 billion fund for Iran’s reconstruction and economic development, although the US is not obligated to contribute. Both nations are expected to finalize the deal within a maximum of 60 days, which may be extended through mutual consent.
While the official signing ceremony was planned for Switzerland, it was canceled as the agreement had already been signed remotely. US Vice-President JD Vance confirmed that discussions would continue in Switzerland to address technical aspects of the agreement.
The deal has sparked criticism within the US, particularly from Republican lawmakers who are concerned about its terms, specifically the reconstruction fund for Iran. Senator Bill Cassidy labeled the agreement as the worst foreign policy blunder in decades. In response, Vance defended the deal, asserting that Iran would not receive financial benefits unless it adhered to the obligations outlined in the agreement.
