Arabic version: الولايات المتحدة تسهل جولة جديدة من المحادثات بين إسرائيل ولبنان

The United States has announced that a new round of talks between Israel and Lebanon will take place in Washington, DC, next week. This decision follows a recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, where ongoing violence has threatened the US-Iran memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the war. According to Al Jazeera, these discussions are set for June 23 and 25.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio communicated with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, emphasizing that bilateral negotiations with Israel are essential for Lebanon’s reconstruction and economic recovery. The talks are seen as a crucial step towards achieving lasting peace between the two nations, which have not engaged in direct discussions since 1993.

Despite the ceasefire and negotiations, the absence of Hezbollah in the talks has hindered meaningful progress. Tensions remain high as recent Israeli attacks have reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 47 individuals in southern Lebanon. The Israeli government has been under pressure to disarm Hezbollah as part of a broader US-backed strategy following a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024.

While Lebanon’s government seeks to address security concerns and push for Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon, recent agreements have only called for Hezbollah’s withdrawal to the north of the Litani River, with no mention of Israel’s full retreat. The ongoing violence continues to complicate efforts to adhere to the US-Iran MoU, which aims to ensure Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
