Arabic version: جوقة جديدة تحتفل بأصوات مجتمع LGBTQ+ في كانديليو، نيو ساوث ويلز
In the quiet village of Candelo, New South Wales, a new sound has emerged from the town hall on Wednesday evenings. The Pandemonium choir, formed to celebrate and amplify the voices of the LGBTQ+ community, has been gathering weekly since May. According to ABC News, the choir has quickly become a vibrant part of the community, providing a space for connection and representation.
Co-founders Mx April Davis and Pip Treloar envisioned a dedicated choir to foster visibility for LGBTQ+ individuals in a town of just 780 residents. “Historically, LGBTQ+ voices have been oppressed, silenced and left out,” Mx Davis noted, emphasizing the choir’s role in creating a joyful and inclusive environment. The choir’s name, inspired by rainbow lorikeets, reflects the grassroots energy behind the initiative.
Since its inception, the choir has attracted more than 20 participants each week, along with their dogs. Rehearsals include vocal warm-ups and a selection of songs, with Olivia Dean’s “One I Need” becoming a favorite. Member Kalpa Goldflam expressed her initial nervousness about singing in a group but found a welcoming atmosphere that made her feel at home.
The choir will take a break for the term but plans to return in August, with potential rehearsals in neighboring towns like Bega. Goldflam highlighted the importance of community, stating, “We need each other and we need to have fun and make beautiful, creative things together.”
