Arabic version: إلغاء عروض Beetlejuice الموسيقية في أستراليا بسبب الضغوط المالية
Beetlejuice the Musical is bringing down the final curtain early, cancelling all shows in Perth, Sydney and Adelaide. The decision was announced by the Michael Cassel Group and comes midway through the show’s Brisbane leg, with the final performance scheduled for July 5 at QPAC.
According to ABC News, the producer cited increasing cost pressures related to the logistics of touring across Australia as a significant factor in the decision. A spokesperson stated that while audience enthusiasm was strong, the economic realities made continuing the tour unsustainable.
The Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) expressed disappointment over the cancellation, highlighting its impact on the cast, crew, and musicians involved in the production. The MEAA emphasized the need for better protections and support for those working in the live performance sector, which is currently facing numerous challenges.
Despite the cancellation, ticket sales for the Adelaide season were reportedly performing well. However, the overall commercial viability of the national tour was deemed insufficient to justify its continuation. Beetlejuice the Musical, based on the 1988 film, has experienced mixed success since its Broadway debut in March 2019, but it has garnered a dedicated fanbase.
This cancellation follows a recent trend, as other musicals like Back to the Future: The Musical have also ended their Australian runs early due to similar financial concerns. The abrupt end to Beetlejuice’s tour highlights the ongoing struggles within the Australian live theatre industry.
