Arabic version: ترامب يقترح رسوم عبور أمريكية لمضيق هرمز
President Donald Trump has pledged there will be no tolls for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, unless they are imposed by the United States. His statement, made on Truth Social, comes as tensions surround a recently signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Iran.
According to Al Jazeera, Trump stated, “There will be NO TOLLS in the Hormuz Strait for 60 days during the Cease Fire Period, and there will be NO TOLLS after the 60-day period has expired,” unless they are imposed by and for the United States of America.
The US and Israel have been engaged in conflict with Iran since February 28, 2026, during which Iran has utilized the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic pressure point. The strait is critical for global oil and gas transport, with nearly 20% of these resources passing through it.
Despite the ceasefire memorandum that aims to pause hostilities and reopen the strait for 60 days, Iran’s joint military command has claimed it has closed the waterway, citing a “clear breach” of the memorandum’s commitments. However, US Central Command has denied this and affirmed that traffic continues to flow.
Future discussions regarding the MOU are anticipated, particularly concerning the implementation of the agreement and the potential for tolls after the initial 60 days. Negotiations are set to begin in Switzerland, with both US and Iranian officials expected to participate.
