City of Canterbury‑Bankstown Mayor Bilal El‑Hayek marked a major milestone in the construction of the Canterbury Leisure & Aquatic Centre this week, turning on the hose to begin filling the 50m Olympic-sized outdoor pool.
After inspecting the site with an aquatic consultant, the Mayor began pumping in water into the pool shell, which will take 1.7 million litres and around a week to completely fill.
“This is a huge step in the construction of this multi-million-dollar, state-of-the-art facility,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“It’s incredible to see the progress made so far on what is a much anticipated, once-in-a-generation project for the city.
“I look forward to opening the doors before summer!”
The pool will be heated and accessible for people of all ages and abilities, with pool hoist and bariatric chair.
The pool also has a swim wall which allows it to be divided into two 25m partitions for different abilities and activities, from recreational and fun to lap lane swimming and competition.
Other recent milestones include the completion and filling of the indoor warm-water program pool, and the installation of the zero-depth children’s water play area.
The facility also includes a 25m heated indoor pool, a fully equipped gym, two fitness studios and a relaxing sauna.
