Arabic version: مدير سابق يُحكم عليه بالسجن بتهمة الاعتداء الجنسي على الأطفال في تسمانيا
Gary Raymond Sykes, a retired principal from Flinders Island, has been sentenced to four years in prison for sexually abusing a teenage girl. The abuse occurred over a 12-month period from December 2019 to December 2020. Sykes, now 70 years old, was in his mid-sixties when he committed the offenses while serving as the principal of Flinders Island District High School, a position he held until his retirement in 2014.
According to ABC News, Supreme Court Justice Robert Pearce described Sykes’ actions as a “very grave breach of trust.” He highlighted the significant age and power imbalance between Sykes and the victim, noting that Sykes was emotionally manipulative throughout the abuse.
Justice Pearce remarked that the sexual acts escalated over time and emphasized the lifelong psychological damage inflicted on the victim, as detailed in her impact statement. Sykes expressed shame over his actions but did not cease his misconduct voluntarily. The judge acknowledged that Sykes’ age may pose challenges during his imprisonment.
Sykes showed no visible emotion as the sentence was pronounced. He will be eligible for parole after serving two years of his four-year term.
