Tom Ugljesa, a dedicated arm wrestler, believes in the potential of the sport to gain Olympic recognition, stating, “If breakdancing can be a sport in the Olympics, then goddamn it, arm wrestling can.” Although arm wrestling has seen a surge in popularity in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Australia has only about 30 clubs dedicated to the sport. According to ABC News, Ugljesa emphasizes the camaraderie among participants, noting that even tough men need spaces to communicate and connect emotionally.

Members of the Gold Coast arm wrestling community often engage in friendly banter, which contributes to stronger relationships. Liam Cross, a 17-year-old arm wrestler, shared his experience of growing both physically and mentally through the sport. He mentioned that mental strategies play a significant role, accounting for about 25% of the game, as he often teases opponents on social media to enhance the competitive atmosphere.

Faatali Mataio, who coaches at the Powerhouse Arm Wrestling Club in Pimpama on the northern Gold Coast, has witnessed the transformative power of the sport firsthand. Since the pandemic, his club has expanded to 65 members. Mataio, who discovered arm wrestling by chance, noted that many members seek connection after facing personal challenges, including PTSD and anxiety. He believes that the sport has made them stronger both mentally and physically.

Ugljesa’s journey into arm wrestling was influenced by his struggles with mental health, particularly after losing friends to suicide more than 10 years ago. He advocates for creating spaces where men can converse about life while engaging in the sport. Ugljesa highlights the importance of camaraderie, stating that the competition fosters friendships that feel immediate and genuine.

Mataio also pointed out that while the sport offers a sense of community outside of competition, it transforms into an intense battle on the table. “Off the table we’re all friendly, we’re all mates, but on the table, it’s pure war,” he remarked, underscoring the dual nature of arm wrestling as both a sport and a source of support for mental well-being.
