Arabic version: فيفا تعدل موعد مباراة إنجلترا والمكسيك بسبب توقعات العواصف
England’s World Cup last-16 tie with Mexico is set to be moved to 19:00 BST on Sunday, bringing it forward from its original kickoff time of 01:00 BST on Monday (18:00 local time on Sunday). This change comes as forecasts predict thunderstorms and heavy rain in Mexico City, where the game is set to take place at the Azteca Stadium. According to BBC News, FIFA has not provided an official explanation for the adjustment.
Under FIFA’s tournament safety regulations, any lightning strikes detected within eight miles of the stadium would trigger an automatic 30-minute delay. This protocol was highlighted after France’s group-stage fixture against Iraq was delayed for over two hours due to safety concerns related to adverse weather in Philadelphia.
Winger Marcus Rashford commented on the potential change during a training session, acknowledging that while it is “not ideal,” the team remains prepared to handle any situation. He emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and readiness, stating, “Everyone, including the players and staff… we are ready for whatever challenges get thrown at us.”
The match’s buildup has also focused on Mexico’s impressive record at the Estadio Azteca, where they have lost only twice in 89 matches. The stadium’s altitude of 7,220 feet (2,240 meters) poses additional challenges, as the thinner air can lead to increased heart rates and fatigue for players. Originally, the match was expected to start in the early evening when temperatures would be around 20°C, but the new kickoff time could see temperatures rise to 26°C, further complicating conditions for the players.
