Arabic version: المعزون يطالبون بالعدالة لخامنئي في جنازة طهران
Mourners gathered at the Grand Mosalla in Tehran for the second day of funeral ceremonies for former Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed during the US and Israeli war that began on February 28. The event saw large crowds, many holding Iranian flags and chanting calls for revenge against former President Donald Trump, whom they blame for Khamenei’s assassination. According to The Guardian, the funeral has become a politically charged spectacle, blending grief with demands for retribution.
The ceremony was attended by senior Iranian officials and military leaders, highlighting the country’s determination to showcase resilience in the face of external threats. Mourners, some dressed in white burial shrouds, expressed their willingness to die as martyrs, chanting slogans like “No compromise, no surrender, only revenge.” The atmosphere was one of heightened emotion, with many participants having traveled long distances to pay their respects.
Mojtaba Khamenei, the newly appointed supreme leader and son of Ali Khamenei, was notably absent from the public eye during the ceremonies. His lack of presence was emphasized as his brothers stood beside their father’s coffin. This absence has raised questions regarding his visibility and role following his father’s death.
Funeral prayers were led by Ayatollah Ja’far Sobhani, who offered prayers not only for Khamenei but also for his family members who lost their lives. The ceremony is part of a week-long series of events, culminating in a mass procession on Monday in Tehran, before the body is transported to holy cities in Iraq and then to Mashhad, where Khamenei was born in 1939. The ongoing funeral processions reflect both a deep sense of loss and a commitment to national solidarity among the participants.
