Arabic version: حضور جماهيري ضخم في جنازة الزعيم الأعلى الإيراني الراحل
A mass funeral procession for Iran’s former supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, commenced in Tehran on July 6, 2026. Millions gathered in the capital to mourn Khamenei, who was killed in February during US-Israel airstrikes. The procession is set to last six days and will cover five cities, culminating in Khamenei’s burial at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad.
According to The Guardian, the funeral follows two days of public farewell ceremonies marked by calls for revenge against the United States. During the prayers held at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla, attendees expressed their grief while simultaneously demanding retribution.
Khamenei’s successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has not made a public appearance during the funeral events. The procession, which includes the coffins of Khamenei and family members killed in the airstrikes, is expected to take approximately 12 hours to reach Mehrabad International Airport.
In the wake of national mourning, daily life in Tehran has been significantly disrupted, with authorities closing streets and airspace. The funeral procession will conclude on Thursday, July 9, 2026, marking the end of a significant chapter in Iran’s political landscape.
