Explosive devices detonated in central Damascus, injuring 18 people, including four police officers, during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit. According to BBC News, the blasts occurred near the hotel where Macron was staying, reportedly caused by two devices.

Macron is in Syria for discussions with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, and his officials confirmed that he was safe and did not hear the explosions. Following his visit to Syria, Macron is scheduled to attend a NATO summit in Turkey. The Elysee Palace stated that the visit would continue as planned despite the incidents.

Videos and images shared on social media captured the aftermath of the explosions, showing flames and smoke rising from a vehicle close to the Four Seasons hotel, which is located approximately 125 meters from the blast site. Syrian state television reported that al-Sharaa welcomed Macron at the presidential palace shortly after the explosions occurred.

In a social media post, Macron expressed solidarity with the Syrian people, stating, “Nothing can smother the aspiration of Syrian women and men to live in a fully sovereign, safe, pluralistic, and united Syria.” He emphasized the dignity and determination he observed during his visit.

Macron’s trip marks a significant moment as he is the first EU leader to visit Syria since al-Sharaa took power after the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024. The visit highlights Syria’s re-emergence on the global stage following years of international isolation. However, the explosions reflect ongoing security challenges, with various militant groups, including the Islamic State, posing threats to stability. Recent violence has also seen pro-government forces involved in attacks against minority groups, exacerbating the country’s tumultuous situation.
