Two brothers, Connor Harnett, 21, and Liam Harnett, 22, face murder charges in connection with the death of their stepfather, Andre Szep, 63, outside Strathaird Primary School in Narre Warren South, Melbourne. The incident occurred during the busy afternoon pick-up at about 3:15pm on June 12, where many parents and students reportedly witnessed the alleged attack.
According to ABC News, the brothers initially faced charges of recklessly causing serious injury but these have since been upgraded to murder following Mr. Szep’s death after a week in critical condition at the hospital. The court hearing took place via video link, where Connor Harnett appeared visibly distressed, shaking his head as details of the case were presented.
During the proceedings at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, the prosecution described the incident as “a tragic murder.” It was revealed that police are conducting DNA and forensic testing, which could take up to three months to complete. Investigators are also seeking additional physical evidence related to the case, the specifics of which remain unclear.
Liam Harnett also appeared in a separate video link hearing. Both brothers are scheduled to return to court for a committal hearing on November 11. The court has instructed police to provide a summary of their prospective DNA evidence within the next week, as the investigation continues into this shocking incident witnessed by many in the community.
