Arabic version: رجل متهم بقتل فتاة تبلغ من العمر 17 عامًا في جاليوينكو
A 34-year-old man has been charged with murder after a 17-year-old girl died in Galiwin’ku, a remote community on Elcho Island, earlier this week. The girl was found unconscious at a home on Monday morning, and local police, assisted by health clinic staff, declared her deceased at the scene. According to ABC News, investigations indicate the man was in a domestic relationship with the victim at the time of her death.
Police arrested the man on Monday, and he was charged with murder on Thursday afternoon after an autopsy indicated that the girl died from blunt force injuries. Detective Acting Superintendent Paul Lawson described the case as complex and noted that the details surrounding their relationship would be included in reports to the coroner and the prosecution.
The accused is expected to appear before the Darwin Local Court on Friday. Detective Lawson mentioned that it would be up to the courts to determine if the man would face an extended mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years for domestic violence murder, as outlined in a recent Northern Territory law change.
In response to the incident, representatives from the East Arnhem Regional Council condemned the act of domestic violence, emphasizing that such violence does not reflect traditional Yolŋu culture. Council President Lapulung Dhamarrandji stated that women are sacred and must be honored and respected within their community. Local organizations are also working to provide education on family violence in the Yolŋu language to promote understanding of various forms of violence.
