Liverpool City Council has marked another successful NAIDOC Week, with thousands of residents coming together at Edwin Wheeler Reserve to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, community, and achievement at the 2026 NAIDOC Family Fun Day.

Deputy Mayor Peter Harle said the event highlighted the strength, pride, and continuing contribution of First Nations communities across Liverpool.

“NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for our entire community to come together in respect and celebration of the world’s oldest living culture,” Cr Harle said.

“This year’s Family Fun Day was a fantastic reflection of that spirit, bringing families together to learn, share and celebrate culture through performances, activities and community connection.”

Cr Harle said the event also provided an important opportunity to recognise outstanding local leaders through the Liverpool NAIDOC Week Awards.

This year’s Liverpool NAIDOC Week Awards recognised outstanding community leaders and contributors, with Aunty Delphine Leslie named Community Elder of the Year, Uncle Brad Bevis awarded Community Member of the Year, Yinnar Yinarrgu Woman’s Group recognised as Community Group of the Year, and Michellie Bevis named Young Person of the Year.

“These award recipients represent the very best of our community: individuals and groups who dedicate themselves to preserving culture, supporting others and strengthening community ties,” he said.

“On behalf of Liverpool City Council, I congratulate all award winners and thank them for their ongoing contributions.”

The day featured a wide range of free, family-friendly activities including cultural performances by the Mariyong Dancers, KARI spear throwing, a reptile petting zoo, inflatables, face painting, community stalls, health checks, and a free BBQ supported by the Bill Crews Foundation, along with free ice cream and coffee.

Cr Harle also acknowledged the importance of partnership in delivering the event.

“This celebration would not be possible without the support of our community partners, volunteers, Elders and local organisations who help ensure NAIDOC Week continues to grow and thrive in Liverpool,” he said.

“Council is proud to stand alongside our First Nations community not just during NAIDOC Week, but every day of the year.”
