Geelong forward Jeremy Cameron will have surgery to repair the AC joint in his left shoulder after suffering a heavy collision in the club’s loss at Sydney Showground, the club confirmed.
According to ABC News, Cameron is expected to miss four to six weeks following the procedure and will miss at least four of the six remaining home-and-away rounds as the Cats pursue a return to the top six.
Cameron, 33, was taken to hospital in Sydney after the clash with GWS opponent Clayton Oliver in the final quarter of the 13-point defeat. He had been managing lingering soreness from a healed right-arm fracture sustained in last year’s grand final loss to the Brisbane Lions and still wears an arm guard. The two-time Coleman Medallist fractured his right arm in last year’s grand final and continues to protect the limb while recovering from more recent injury.
Teammates Jack Henry (throat) and Tanner Bruhn (neck) were also taken to hospital on the night but have been cleared of serious injury, while GWS youngster Phoenix Gothard dislocated his left shoulder. Henry and Bruhn will be monitored during the week to determine their return-to-play timelines.
At Hawthorn, defender Karl Amon has undergone a clean-up procedure on his knee after managing pain through the season. The Hawks, who sit third on the ladder at 11-5, are confident Amon will be available before finals. The 30-year-old missed Geelong’s Easter Monday fixture in round four due to cartilage irritation but had recently returned and collected 12 disposals, one mark and two tackles in Hawthorn’s 64-point win over Carlton.
“This has been in consideration for a number of weeks,” Hawks football boss Rob McCartney said in a statement. “While Karl has had some intermittent pain throughout the season, there was no further risk in him playing games. We expect Karl to be available for selection before finals.”
The medical decisions for both clubs reflect preparations for the closing weeks of the home-and-away season: Geelong are ninth at 9-8 and aiming to climb back into finals contention, while Hawthorn are consolidating a top-six position. What happens next: Cameron will miss at least four of the six remaining home-and-away rounds, and there are six weeks left before the end of the home-and-away season.
