According to ABC News, the Pentagon has identified 1st Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Hawaii, and Private Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Texas, as the two US soldiers killed in Jordan while defending against Iranian missile and drone attacks. US Central Command said they died on Friday while supporting the US-led mission against Islamic State.

A third service member remains missing following the attack. Central Command said unidentified remains had been recovered from the site and were being examined. The military has not disclosed how Feehan and Gonzales were killed. Their deaths bring the reported American military death toll in the war with Iran to 17.

The conflict began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear and missile programs and allied militia groups. President Donald Trump said the latest US strikes were carried out “in honour” of the fallen troops and defended the campaign as necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Monday that they had launched fresh attacks on US military assets across the Middle East, naming Jordan’s Aqaba airport, military facilities in Kuwait and positions in Syria as targets. Kuwait said it intercepted hostile drones, while sirens sounded in Bahrain. US Central Command said it had conducted a ninth consecutive night of strikes aimed at reducing Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The fighting has also affected civilian infrastructure. Kuwait said a desalination plant was struck for a second consecutive day, causing a fire. Despite the escalation, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington remained open to a diplomatic solution, while Iran’s Foreign Ministry said diplomacy remained a tool for pursuing national interests.
