According to ABC News, Singaporean curator Low Kee Hong has been appointed artistic director of the 2028 Biennale of Sydney. He is the first leader of the event from south-east Asia since the biennale began in 1973.
Kee Hong is currently creative director of Manchester arts organisation Factory International, which runs the Manchester International Festival. His previous roles include work at Hong Kong’s West Kowloon District Authority, artistic director of the Singapore Arts Festival and founding director of the Singapore Biennale.
The 2028 program will include contemporary art, music, architecture, performance, literature, philosophy, food, fashion and nature. Kee Hong said he wanted to develop an exhibition that responds to the present and protects space for deep listening during challenging times.
He plans to spend time in Sydney in October and after delivering the Manchester International Festival in July 2027. His engagement will include meeting artists and communities in Sydney and across Australia, and learning from Indigenous communities about plant life, nature, medicine, food and community.
Kee Hong also intends to work with Sydney arts institutions so commissions can have a sustained life after the biennale. The Biennale of Sydney begins on March 21, 2028.
