According to France 24, calm returned for now after a day of deadly chaos in Spain’s small North African enclave of Ceuta, where 60,000 migrants crossed into the territory.

France 24 reported that around 45,000 of those who entered Ceuta returned to neighbouring Morocco within hours. Authorities instructed people to turn around and go back, warning that they could otherwise face eventual expulsion.

The report said the scale of the arrivals raised fears of a humanitarian crisis. Its coverage said 57 people died crossing the border.

Spain is a major entry point into Europe for migrants seeking a better life. Many people who reached Ceuta hoped the enclave could help them continue towards mainland Europe.
