According to Al Jazeera, Israeli forces have intensified operations in Gaza since a roadmap for the second stage of the enclave’s “ceasefire” was announced last week. At least 19 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks on Saturday, bringing the weekend death toll to 26, including women and children.

US President Donald Trump described Hamas’s acceptance of the Gaza deal as a major step towards security and stability. The Board of Peace and the International Stabilization Force had announced agreement on a 15-point roadmap for the next phase. Hamas formally accepted the document, including a phased disarmament, but Israel has cited “serious security concerns”.

Israeli media reported that the government is demanding Hamas’s total disarmament, with weapons handed to a Western state and no Palestinian role in administering the process. Doron Spielman, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, said Israeli forces would not withdraw until Hamas is completely demilitarised.

Analysts told Al Jazeera that Israeli political considerations could be delaying implementation before general elections due in October. Mtanes Shehadeh said the government was treating the Gaza understandings as a tactical manoeuvre, while Ahmed al-Hila said the critical 14-day negotiation period for implementation protocols remained frozen.

The Israeli military has also refused to withdraw from the first “Yellow Line” area, which accounts for about 52 percent of Gaza, and seeks freedom of military action across the enclave. The roadmap calls for an independent, technocratic Palestinian administration to manage civilian affairs and reconstruction. Israel has objected to Qatar and Turkiye joining verification mechanisms, while Board of Peace envoy Nickolay Mladenov condemned strikes that killed civilians and destroyed medical supplies.
