According to ABC News, Queensland Rail has reached an in-principle agreement with unions representing train controllers, but south-east Queensland services will continue on a reduced timetable.

The agreement covers about 270 employees represented by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union and The Services Union. The Fair Work Commission has overseen bargaining since May, after six Queensland Rail enterprise agreements involving seven unions expired earlier in 2026. Queensland Rail reached a deal covering half of its workers in June.

Queensland Rail described the latest agreement as “positive progress” while saying negotiations with other unions were still continuing. It said the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union, representing rollingstock employees, remained involved in protected industrial action including rolling work stoppages and an overtime ban. Queensland Rail said the action had contributed to a rollingstock maintenance backlog that prevented full-service running.

From this week, Queensland Rail restored 135 weekly train services to strengthen the reduced timetable. Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg said progress with agreements was positive, but said ongoing protected action, particularly by the AMWU, was delaying a return to full services. The replacement agreements include an 8.5 per cent wage increase over three years and a strategic delivery allowance. The final offer requires approval from the Queensland Rail board and the state government.
