According to Allafrica, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has joined 67 other civil society organizations in urging the UN Human Rights Council to extend the mandate of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for the Sudan for two years.

The organizations also called for the mission to receive adequate resources to investigate grave violations and support accountability. Ahead of the Human Rights Council’s 63rd session, they urged states to strengthen the mission’s capacity to investigate abuses, identify perpetrators and preserve evidence.

CPJ said the mission’s continued work is critical to documenting attacks on journalists in Sudan and helping ensure those responsible can be held accountable. The organization described the mission as one of the few international mechanisms able to independently document attacks and preserve evidence concerning abuses against journalists.

The call comes as the Rapid Support Forces and other parties to the conflict continue to target journalists through killings, detention, abduction, threats and other abuses, CPJ said. It said such violations often occur with complete impunity.

The groups’ joint statement is available in English, while the original article was published by CPJ.
