According to BBC News, interim coach Marcus Trescothick praised Joe Root’s calming influence after England beat Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs in the first Test at Headingley.

Root’s second spell as England’s Test captain began with a victory following a turbulent period that included an Ashes defeat by Australia, off-field issues, Ben Stokes’ resignation as captain and Brendon McCullum’s dismissal as coach.

Trescothick said England had retained some of the “best bits” of the previous leadership but were “not Brendon and Ben”. He said Root brought exciting and calming qualities, with clearer plans for bowling and management of individuals behind the scenes.

England took a wicket with the first ball of the Test and controlled Pakistan over two and a half rain-affected days. While Trescothick said the side aimed to be clever and smart, England still scored at 4.55 runs per over.

New Zealand’s Stephen Fleming, appointed as McCullum’s replacement, will not take charge until England’s winter tour of South Africa. Trescothick said Fleming spoke with him and Root every day during the Pakistan win, while former Australia coach Mike Hussey has been approached to become batting coach.
