According to ABC News, Wests Tigers produced the season’s biggest upset by defeating the Sydney Roosters 25-24 at the Sydney Football Stadium, while Cronulla beat Gold Coast 30-22 to remain in the hunt for an NRL top-four finish.

Jock Madden kicked a 79th-minute field goal to end the Tigers’ eight-game losing run. The halfback had missed the past month with a haematoma, and his decisive kick came after the Roosters had levelled at 24-24 through a Sam Walker penalty goal with fewer than five minutes left.

The Tigers lost prop Alex Twal to a head knock inside 60 seconds and conceded when Roosters winger Billy Smith scored after three minutes. But Patrick Herbert set up Jeral Skelton for two tries and Tony Sukkar for another inside 26 minutes. Solomone Saukuru and co-captain Api Koroisau also crossed, with Koroisau taking over the goalkicking and producing a 40/20.

The result left the Roosters third on 38 points with a plus-162 points differential, behind the Warriors and Penrith, who were also on 38 points. Roosters coach Trent Robinson said it was a poor game from his side. Lock Victor Radley was placed on report and underwent a late head injury assessment.

Earlier, the Sharks recovered from an eight-point second-half deficit at Skilled Park to snap a two-game losing streak. The 30-22 victory gave Cronulla two competition points and kept the side in contention for a double chance in the finals. ABC News reported that no team in NRL history has won the premiership from outside the top four.
