According to ABC News, Bundaberg restaurateurs Pramila Dangol and Clinton Baker escaped catastrophic flooding in Nepal by running up a mountain with their three-year-old daughter after a collapsed glacier sent a wall of water through Betrawati.

The couple were visiting Ms Dangol’s family for ceremonies when the disaster struck on August 26. They said villagers had 15 minutes’ warning before the water arrived. Mr Baker carried their daughter, Prammisha, uphill as the family fled.

“When it hit the buildings, it just blew up,” Mr Baker said. From the mountain, the pair watched water and debris swallow buildings and people below. They saw people climbing onto rooftops of buildings three and four storeys high, while Mr Baker said the waves were higher than the buildings.

Ms Dangol’s family home, where she was born and raised, was washed away. More than a week later, the couple were still searching for members of her extended family. Ms Dangol said they feared no-one was alive, but hoped to find bodies.

Mr Baker said he remained shaken and wanted to return to Australia, while trying to stay positive. The trip was the first time the couple had taken Prammisha to Nepal, where Ms Dangol wanted to show her daughter the place she spent her childhood.
