According to ABC News, a male cyclist in his 50s was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition after a crash with a vehicle near Hobart on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Kennedy Drive in Cambridge, north-east of the city, at about 12.10pm. Police believe a white Mazda collided with the cyclist outside Cambridge Airport.

Acting Inspector Rob Bessell said the cyclist suffered head and neck injuries. Tasmania’s Emergency Air Service is based at the airport, and he said paramedics and doctors were in immediate attendance.

The Mazda driver, a woman in her 70s, was shaken but was not physically injured. Police said she stopped at the scene and was assisting with inquiries.

Police said the car was travelling towards Hobart and turning into Cambridge Airport, while the cyclist was travelling towards Sorell. The cyclist was wearing a helmet. Investigations are continuing, with no indication at this stage that speed or inattention caused the crash.
