Arabic version: مجلس الأمن يراجع التقدم السياسي في ليبيا

According to Allafrica, the UN Security Council was set to hear the latest developments in Libya on Wednesday, with discussions focusing on the country’s situation as it seeks stability after years of strife. A top UN official pointed to “encouraging progress.”

Libya has faced political dysfunction since the 2011 collapse of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime. The collapse shattered State institutions and led to recurring struggles over legitimacy and power, leaving the country grappling with a prolonged search for stability.

Last month, Libya’s rival political camps agreed on new rules for running the elections commission and holding a vote within two years. The agreement was identified as a recent development as the Security Council took stock of the current situation.

UN agencies are also supporting efforts to address multiple challenges in Libya. A mine action programme cleared 14,066 items of explosive ordnance from Al-Sweihli Farm in Misratah between January and September this year. Live coverage of the Security Council discussions was provided by the UN Meetings Coverage Section team, while the session could be watched on UN Web TV.
