Sydney Community Connect is bringing the community together for an important conversation about addiction, recovery and prevention, with its annual “Let’s Talk Addiction” seminar taking place on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, at the Bryan Brown Theatre in Bankstown.
The free public event, running from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, aims to break the silence surrounding addiction, challenge stigma and encourage open conversations about one of the most pressing issues affecting individuals, families and communities.
Held under the theme “Real Conversations. Stronger Communities,” the seminar will bring together medical professionals, psychologists, lawyers, police representatives, community leaders and individuals with lived experience of addiction to share their knowledge, insights and personal journeys towards recovery.
Breaking the Silence Around Addiction
For several years, Sydney Community Connect has been organising this important initiative to raise awareness, promote education and provide a supportive environment where difficult conversations can take place without judgement.
Addiction can affect people from all walks of life, regardless of age, background or circumstances. Its consequences often extend beyond the individual, affecting families, friendships, workplaces and entire communities.
By encouraging honest discussions and sharing real-life experiences, the seminar seeks to help people better understand addiction, recognise warning signs and discover the support available to those seeking help.
One of the event’s most powerful elements will be the opportunity to hear directly from individuals who have experienced addiction and worked towards sobriety. Their personal stories will offer hope, encouragement and valuable lessons about resilience, recovery and the importance of community support.
Bringing Experts, Leaders and the Community Together
The seminar will feature contributions from professionals across several fields, offering different perspectives on addiction and its impact.
Doctors and psychologists will discuss the health and psychological aspects of addiction, while lawyers and police representatives will provide insights into the legal and social challenges associated with substance dependence and related issues.
Community leaders will also explore how families, organisations and local services can work together to support vulnerable individuals and promote prevention.
Local ministers, council representatives and members of parliament are also expected to attend, demonstrating a shared commitment to strengthening community awareness and supporting recovery initiatives.
The event will focus on six key areas:
- Awareness: Understanding addiction and its impact on individuals and society.
- Conversation: Encouraging honest discussions and sharing personal experiences.
- Support: Connecting individuals and families with information and assistance.
- Prevention: Educating and empowering young people to make informed decisions.
- Community: Strengthening collaboration between residents, professionals and organisations.
- Change: Inspiring positive action towards healthier, stronger communities.
A Free Event Open to Everyone
Sydney Community Connect emphasises that the seminar is not only for those directly affected by addiction.
Families, young people, parents, educators, community workers, professionals and anyone interested in learning more about addiction prevention and recovery are warmly encouraged to attend.
The organisers believe that education and understanding are essential to reducing stigma and creating an environment where people feel comfortable seeking help.
The event also provides an opportunity for attendees to connect with professionals, community representatives and others who share a commitment to building a healthier and more supportive society.
Proudly Supported by Community Partners
This year’s seminar is proudly sponsored by ABW Foods and Oz Arab Media, whose support reflects the importance of community partnerships in promoting education, awareness and positive social change.
