According to ABC News, Victorian Labor has pledged a $30 weekly cap on freeway tolls if it wins the state election, while the Coalition has promised to repeal the ban on gas installations in new buildings within 100 days of taking office.
Premier Ben Carroll said Labor’s toll plan would begin at the start of next year and operate through a rebate system for individuals and small businesses. Cars, utes, motorbikes and vans would be eligible, while small businesses could claim for up to five vehicles. The program would allow rebates of up to $350 a week, or $5,000 a year.
Labor has calculated the policy would cost $191 million in the year beginning January 2027. The proposal mirrors a Coalition commitment announced by Opposition Leader Jess Wilson in mid-August, which would cap toll-road use at $50 a week for two years. The Coalition plan was calculated to cost $90 million a year from July 2027.
Separately, Ms Wilson said a Coalition government would reverse Labor’s policy banning gas connections in new homes within 100 days of winning office. The election is scheduled for November 28. Both toll-cap proposals resemble a New South Wales cost-of-living program that caps tolls at $50 a week and began in July this year.
