According to BBC News, the Champions League has produced 187 goals so far this season, averaging 4.16 per match — the highest rate in the competition’s history. The total continues an upward trend from the previous two campaigns following the introduction of the current format at the start of 2024-25.
The scoring rate is also the third highest in European Cup history. Only the 1959-60 season, at 4.19 goals per game, and the inaugural 1955-56 campaign, at 4.38, recorded higher averages. Former Manchester United and England winger Ashley Young said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Look how many goals have been scored, it’s phenomenal. The attackers are being clinical.”
Recent matchdays have added to the surge. Forty goals were scored across nine games on Tuesday, while 46 goals were registered last Wednesday, the third highest-scoring day in Champions League history. The 78 goals across Tuesday and Wednesday last week made matchday two the highest-scoring matchday on record, nine more than the 69 scored in matchday one this season.
The 36-team league phase replaced the former group stage in 2024-25. Each club now plays eight one-off fixtures, rather than six matches against three group opponents. The top eight qualify directly for the knockout rounds, teams placed ninth to 24th enter a two-legged play-off stage, and the bottom eight are eliminated.
Some observers argue that the format reduces early pressure and encourages more expansive football. The Times football writer Tom Arnott told BBC Radio 5 Live that entertainment has increased, while questioning whether quality has risen to the same extent. He said teams may have more margin for error because they know that five wins from eight games can be enough.
