According to ABC News, Nationals MP Michelle Landry is expected to announce on Friday that she will retire from federal politics at the next election, creating an opening for Nationals leader Matt Canavan to seek a move to the lower house.

Landry, the Nationals’ chief whip, has held the Queensland seat of Capricornia since 2013. The next election is due in 2028. Her office said she would make a “significant announcement” alongside Senator Canavan, who is expected to nominate for preselection as the LNP candidate for Capricornia.

Canavan holds the number two place on the LNP Senate ticket, behind Liberal James McGrath. He lives in Yeppoon and recently said he would “do whatever it takes” if needed to retain another lower-house seat as the Nationals confront the prospect of losses to One Nation.

Some LNP members in Capricornia have told the ABC they are ready for a change. Canavan became Nationals leader in March and has recently campaigned for rowing to be held in Rockhampton, within Capricornia, during the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games. Some in the Nationals believe the party leader should sit in the lower house with other major party leaders.

LNP sources told the ABC there has been internal discussion over who could replace Canavan on the Senate ticket. One Nation has gained support since the 2025 election, winning seats in South Australia and Western Australia as well as its first federal lower-house seat. The latest Newspoll placed One Nation’s primary vote at 28 per cent, Labor at 29 per cent and the Coalition at 20 per cent.
