According to ABC News, the Tasmania Devils have decided not to offer inaugural VFL captain Robbie Fox a new contract for the 2027 season following an incident at a Hobart pub.
Fox, 33, was removed from the Granada Tavern in Hobart’s northern suburbs after becoming drunk and disorderly at the venue two weeks earlier, the ABC understands. He was reportedly abusive towards some staff, and a bottle was thrown during the incident. The Granada Tavern declined to comment when contacted.
The incident contributed to the Devils’ decision to part ways with Fox as a player. In a statement, Devils VFL boss Aaron Pidgeon said the club’s expectations regarding player behaviour and adherence to its standards formed part of the decision not to offer a fresh deal.
Fox will remain employed by the club as its strategic projects and impact lead. The Burnie-born veteran defender joined Tasmania after playing 105 AFL games for the Sydney Swans, including the 2022 and 2024 AFL Grand Finals.
In an injury-affected inaugural VFL season for the Devils, Fox played 13 games and led the side to a top-four finish and a home semi-final.
