According to ABC News, Australian music faces a streaming imbalance even as original acts continue producing new work. APRA-AMCOS reported that 91 per cent of music streamed by Australians in the 2025-26 financial year was imported, while Australian music’s streaming share was 8.5 per cent and had fallen 37.5 per cent over five years.
Adrian Tisato, the new chairperson of MusicSA, described the sector as being in a “post-apocalypse”, citing Napster, digital streaming and COVID-19 as parts of a wider disruption. He said musicians were nevertheless still making music, and argued Adelaide was experiencing an “electric buzz” around intimate venues, regional shows and mini-festivals.
MusicSA supports and develops South Australia’s contemporary music sector. Tisato succeeds John Glenn, who retired after nearly six years as chair. Good Music Month will begin with a Hyde Street party on Friday night and continue at venues in Adelaide and across the state until November 30, with local, national and international performers on the program.
The national Regional and Remove Music Summit will run in Mount Gambier from Wednesday to Friday, while MusicSA’s annual SA Music Awards are scheduled for November 10. Tisato said Adelaide should focus on whether its own artists are thriving in intimate venues, adding that quality remains central for musicians and songwriters seeking a future in the industry.
