Arabic version: وفد قطري يجري محادثات هدنة في طهران

According to Al Jazeera, Qatari mediators arrived in Tehran on Friday in an apparent effort to negotiate the revival of a ceasefire in the conflict between the United States and Iran. Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported that the delegation was coordinating with US officials.

The delegation is headed by the senior adviser to Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani. Its visit to the Iranian capital is for talks and consultations, IRNA said.

The diplomatic effort follows reports that a letter from US Vice President JD Vance to Iran’s security chief Mohsen Rezaei was delivered on Sunday by a Qatari delegation. The letter reportedly proposed a new diplomatic process intended to prevent a new round of US strikes.

Al Jazeera reported that the letter was said to have been well received. Its correspondent in Tehran, Resul Serdar, said there had been no official reaction from Tehran, but sources said Iranian authorities welcomed what they described as a more respectful tone than in earlier US correspondence.

Sources told Al Jazeera that the Qatari delegation was believed to be seeking Iran’s response and to discuss a possible new diplomatic path. A meeting could possibly take place within a week in either Doha or Istanbul. Separately, The Wall Street Journal reported that US President Donald Trump had warned Gulf allies to prepare for a brief, high-intensity military campaign after next week’s US midterm elections.
