According to BBC News, US President Donald Trump criticised Republican candidates after Democrats took control of both the Senate and House of Representatives in the US midterm elections, while saying Democrats had done “a good job”.

Trump singled out Greg Abbott, who lost the Texas governor race to Democrat Gina Hinojosa. In a Truth Social post, Trump said Abbott would not have lost if he “hadn’t become a RINO in the last six months”, using the term for “Republican in Name Only”.

The president said Republicans “would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” if he had been on the ballot. He told CBS News that, in some cases, voters did not like the candidates and that some candidates “were not my friend”.

Trump said he accepted the election results, telling The New York Times he was “absolutely willing to accept” them and would look forward to working with Democrats. In a Fox News interview, he said he was surprised by the outcome and said Democrats “fought hard”, while predicting he would veto legislation he described as “insane”.

Trump also said the Iran conflict had contributed to the Republican defeat, particularly through higher fuel prices. He said people agreed with his approach to Iran but may not have accepted “the short term consequences of paying more for gasoline”.
