According to Al Jazeera, the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor says Israeli restrictions are preventing child amputees in Gaza from travelling abroad for specialised treatment. The Geneva-based organisation said restrictions on travel also cover medical evacuations, leaving hundreds of children unable to access needed care.
The monitor reported on Wednesday that 1,134 children in Gaza had undergone limb amputations due to Israeli attacks. It said few are receiving the long-term medical care required after amputations, including rehabilitation and prosthetic support.
The World Health Organization assessed 2,300 amputees, including children and adults, for treatment between September 2024 and May 2026. Of those, only 500, or fewer than a quarter, received permanent prosthetics, according to the report.
Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said only eight certified prosthetics and orthotics professionals are currently available in Gaza. It also said the territory lacks enough equipment to manufacture, fit, maintain and adjust prosthetic limbs. The organisation said Israeli restrictions have prevented Palestinians from importing equipment needed for prosthetic production, while specialised teams need entry permits to work and train local staff.
The group warned that continued denial of treatment, rehabilitation and appropriate education could cause lifelong deprivation. It said missed medical follow-up and failures to adjust prosthetic limbs as children grow may lead to complications, chronic pain and greater difficulty moving. The organisation accused Israel of war crimes and said the amputations and obstruction of treatment and rehabilitation form part of a broader pattern.
