According to ABC News, a 14-year-old Wallsend boy has been charged after a motorhome fire near Newcastle left its 69-year-old occupant critically injured.

Police allege the motorhome was set alight in the early hours of October 29 while the man was inside. The boy was arrested on Thursday and charged with damage property by fire/explosives greater than $15,000 and reckless grievous bodily harm.

He appeared in the Children’s Court and was refused bail. The teenager is due to return to court next Friday.

Witnesses reported hearing loud bangs and explosions before the motorhome was engulfed in a fireball. Fire and Rescue NSW said at the time that there had been reports of gas bottles being involved. Police described the blaze as suspicious, while forensic officers declared the motorhome a crime scene.

Police said a resident pulled the man from the burning vehicle. NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him for burns before he was taken to John Hunter Hospital and later flown to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
