According to The Guardian, Sarah Kopp reported a former PE teacher after later recognising that a relationship that began when she was 15 had been coercive. The teacher, Paul, was 31 when he joined her Queensland high school in Australia.
Kopp said his attention initially felt exciting, as he praised her gymnastics and regularly talked with her. She said concerns and rumours about his interest led to his suspension, but he later arranged to meet her. Their physical relationship began while she was still 15, according to her account.
Paul later took a teaching job in Brisbane, where Kopp and her mother moved. Kopp said they went public as a couple when she turned 18, but the relationship remained unhappy. After they reunited following a separation, she became pregnant and later had two children.
At 29, Kopp said she began to understand the relationship differently after meeting with a psychologist and observing other parents’ relationships. She made a statement to police in 2018. The case went to trial in April 2024, when a jury found Paul guilty of indecent treatment of a child.
He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and released in August 2025, the report said. Kopp has since founded Step in for Kids, a charity intended to raise awareness of the early stages of grooming, and retrained as a dance and drama teacher.
