According to ABC News, parts of Far North Queensland are enduring a record-breaking heatwave while south-east Queensland receives a brief break from repeated thunderstorm activity.
The Bureau of Meteorology said Weipa, on the Cape York Peninsula, recorded its hottest November day on Saturday when the temperature reached 39.8 degrees Celsius. Meteorologist Kimba Wong said maximum temperatures had persisted at exceptional levels across parts of the peninsula, with Weipa recording 33 consecutive days above 36C.
An extreme heatwave warning remains in place for the peninsula, while severe heatwave warnings cover several other regions from the Gulf Country to the Whitsundays. The bureau expects parts of western Cape York Peninsula to experience another week of maximum temperatures in the high 30s to low 40s, with overnight temperatures in the mid to high 20s.
Localised heavy rain and storms are possible around Mackay and the Eungella ranges on Monday. In the south-east, the storm break is expected to be short-lived as another trough system pushes across the state from Tuesday through Thursday, bringing a renewed risk of severe storms on Wednesday and Thursday.
Maximum temperatures in the south-east are forecast to be milder on Monday before rising later in the week, followed by a slightly cooler change. Moderate flood warnings remain active along the Barcoo, Bulloo and Upper Balonne rivers.
