Three local Parramatta libraries have become the first in Australia to adopt new forms of artificial intelligence (AI), hosting AI Tutor Robots to teach kids.

The ABii Smart Tutor Robot is designed to help children aged 3-11 with STEM, reading and writing skills and is available to use for free at Epping, Wentworth Point and Parramatta branches.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said it’s another Council initiative offering Western Sydney children a chance to get ahead in the classroom.

“A high-quality education opens many doors and the addition of these new AI robots into our libraries provides the best opportunity for our next generation to get ahead of the game,” Cr Zaiter said.

“We want our kids to be prepared for the future and have the competitive edge – improving STEM and English skills through ABii sets our youngest children on the path to success.”

Before using the robots, children are given a pre-assessment to determine their current skill level to ensure each session is tailored to their needs.  During the session ABii guides the children through a set of tasks while celebrating their progress.

“When I was young, robots like this were something we saw only in sci-fi movies like Star Wars – in 2025 they are an exciting reality,” Cr Zaiter said.

“Since sessions started in October, both parents and kids have reported feeling more confident about their education and abilities.

“I’m proud that City of Parramatta Libraries is the first in Australia to acquire this technology to make learning fun, accessible and free.”
