People from around Sydney gathered in Greenacre today, in Sydney’s west, to continue celebrating for the people of Gaza now that the ceasefire agreement is in place.

Vivienne Moore travelled from the inner west of Sydney to attend. She explains that the ceasefire for Gaza (the Israel-Hamas ceasefire) should be a continued source of celebration for the Australian community.

“I came here today to celebrate that the bombing has stopped and that a ceasefire is in place,” she says. “My hope is that the world holds those responsible for the deaths in Gaza accountable. (We) won’t stop protesting for rights in Gaza.”

Families gathered on Waterloo Road, the usually busy street in Greenacre, sharing in the joy and relief the ceasefire brings to their families overseas. Among the crowd were many first-generation immigrants, who have recently made Australia their home.

Igtirab, a Palestinian-born Australian, shares her happiness over the victory of peace in Gaza. “I’m from the West Bank, but my family is here in Australia,” says Igtirab. “It’s time that we celebrate this victory for Gaza after 470 days of war. Every nation should live in peace, and people should feel safe in their own homelands.”

While some people gathered for Palestine, others also celebrated for Syria. Syrian-born Bushra explains her hopes that this ceasefire agreement, along with the change in government in Syria, will bring hope and newfound prosperity to the Middle East. She explains in Arabic, “My hope is for the Australian government to help people rebuild their homes in Palestine and Syria, or support them in moving to a safer country like Australia.”

Together, they expressed their hopes for lasting peace.
