A woman who broke her spine when she fell from a window as she attempted to escape triple killer Valdo Calocane has told an inquiry of her anger when she was informed he could not be prosecuted due to mental health issues.

According to BBC News, Calocane broke into the woman’s flat in 2020, three years before he killed Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates and injured three others in the Nottingham attacks on 13 June 2023. The inquiry revealed that Calocane was experiencing serious mental health challenges, including a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia.

The woman, who had recently moved to Nottingham from Italy, recounted the terrifying experience of hearing persistent knocking at her door, which escalated to violent attempts to break in. In a panic, she leaned out of the window to call for help but ultimately fell approximately 10 to 12 feet, sustaining significant back injuries.

In her testimony, she described her anger when informed by a police officer that Calocane could not be prosecuted due to his mental health condition. Despite her injuries and trauma, she felt that the psychiatric hospital he was sent to was insufficient for the harm he had caused. The inquiry continues, with over 100 witnesses expected to provide evidence regarding the events surrounding the attacks.
