Jane Fonda expressed her surprise at Barbra Streisand leading the tribute to Robert Redford during the Oscars ceremony. Speaking at an Oscars afterparty, Fonda questioned why Streisand was chosen for the in memoriam segment, stating, “I want to know how come Streisand was up there doing that for Redford?” Fonda noted that she had worked with Redford in four films, compared to Streisand’s one, and remarked, “I have more to say.”

Streisand’s tribute included memories of her collaboration with Redford in the 1973 film “The Way We Were,” where she also performed the title track. She praised Redford for his integrity and contributions to both film and social causes, highlighting his advocacy for press freedom and environmental protection.

Fonda, who has long admired Redford, reflected on their relationship, stating, “I was always in love with him. The most gorgeous human being and such great values. And he did a lot for movies, he really changed movies, lifted up independent movies.” She emphasized Redford’s significant impact on the film industry and independent cinema.

Redford passed away in October 2023, and Fonda has previously shared her emotional response to his death on social media, acknowledging his influence and the personal connection they shared. The Oscars in memoriam segment also honored other stars, including Rob Reiner and Diane Keaton, but drew attention for notable omissions like Brigitte Bardot and Bud Cort. According to The Guardian, Fonda’s comments have sparked discussions about the selection process for tributes at the Academy Awards.
