Warmer weather means more outdoor adventures for our furry friends, but it’s also a time for owners be extra careful as pets can suffer in the heat.
Learn how to get your pets summer ready and hear tips to help them beat the heat at City of Canterbury Bankstown’s Pets Day Out on Sunday 10 November.
Bring your leashed pets along to the free family-friendly event at Vale of Ah Reserve, Milperra, from 11am-3pm for a variety of interactive activities, demonstrations, stalls and more.
Attendees can hear from leading experts at the Pet Talk Stage, including Doctor Charlie Mae from Small Animal Specialist Hospital, who will offer her advice on summer dangers for dogs.
Doctor Mae said, as the weather heats up and more people are out and about, she sees a significant increase in pets being brought to emergency.
“We get lots of animals suffering heatstroke and dehydration, burns on paw pads from walking on hot grounds, and injuries from ticks and snakes,” she said.
Dr Mae said all of these are avoidable and shared her top tips to keeping pets safe in summer:
- Give your pets access to shade and water at all times;
- Make sure you have a good tick prevention product like a spot on, tablet or collar;
- Keep your pets away from long grass and avoid off-leash activity around areas where snakes may be present; and
- Don’t leave pets unattended in hot cars.
With more than 52,000 dogs and cats registered in Canterbury-Bankstown, Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said we all want what’s best for our pets.
“This event is a great way to get leading information and advice from experts who really know their stuff,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
Pets Day Out will also feature a 500 Paws Walk brought to you by Sydney Water, where you can take your pooch on a 15-minute stroll along the Georges River while getting advice from professional dog walkers.
Enter them in the ‘paw-dorable’ Pet Parade and watch them strut their stuff for the chance to win a prize.
And bring them over for some quiet time at the Animal Chill Zone, where you can talk to Council’s Animal Control Officers about pet registration and being a responsible pet owner. Free microchipping will also be available for Canterbury-Bankstown residents.
There will be a range of free activities to keep the kids entertained including craft workshops, face painting and a baby animal farm.
