On Thursday, 26 September 2024, an impactful event was held at the Tatterson Pavilion in Keysborough, VIC, celebrating the launch of My Superhero Voice, a significant resource in the Australian Government’s efforts to prevent child sexual abuse. The book, authored by Yvonne Sewankambo and illustrated by Nea Valdivia, was introduced as part of the ‘One Talk at a Time’ campaign. This national initiative, launched in October 2023, seeks to empower adults to engage in proactive conversations with children about their safety and the prevention of abuse.
The event commenced with a warm welcome to guests, followed by a traditional Welcome to Country. Australia’s Attorney-General, Mark Dreyfus KC, MP, delivered a keynote address, officially launching the My Superhero Voice storybook. He highlighted the importance of fostering open, preventative discussions between adults and children, especially within culturally diverse communities.
Yvonne Sewankambo, the author of the book, then took the stage to share her journey in creating the story, discussing how the resource provides a culturally safe and effective way for communities to address the issue of child sexual abuse.
The attendees were treated to a reading of My Superhero Voice, offering a glimpse into the colourful illustrations and narrative designed to make conversations about child safety more approachable. This was followed by a cultural performance, adding to the event’s celebration of diversity and inclusion.
Among the distinguished attendees was Mr. Remy Wehbe, Director of Oz Arab Media, who lent his support to the campaign and its broader mission. The presence of media figures like Mr. Wehbe underscored the importance of raising awareness and fostering dialogue on these crucial issues across all sectors of society.
The event concluded with an opportunity for socialising and further discussion, solidifying the One Talk at a Time campaign’s commitment to creating safer environments for children in Australia.
