In a powerful literary endeavour that bridges personal experience and collective memory, Lebanese-Australian academic and writer Dr Chaiban Haikal launched his latest book titled “My Journey – History and Lessons” at a grand event at Salon Dr. Bahia Abou Hamad in Punchbowl supported by the Lebanese Ministry of Culture and hosted by the Bridging The Edge Association in Punchbowl, NSW. The book is a deep exploration of history, cultural memory, and the repetitive nature of human error – all viewed through a critical and philosophical lens. The event was also supported by Canterbury Bankstown Council and Oz Arab Media.
Dr Haikal, a respected figure in both academic and community circles, used the event to express his firm belief that history is not a mere recounting of past events, but a field rich with lessons for the present and future. In his own words, “History repeats itself in different forms, and unless we extract its lessons, we are bound to relive the same tragedies.”
The event featured prominent community figures and intellectuals, including philosophers, poets, journalists, and representatives from key cultural institutions. Among the speakers were Dr Moustapha Al Helwe, Dr Bahia Abou-Hamad, George Mansour, Dr Marwan Kassab, Mr Sarkis Karam (representing An-Nahar Newspaper in Australia), and Badwe El Hage. Their remarks echoed a common theme – that Dr Haikal’s work serves as a beacon of cultural preservation and intellectual honesty.

Throughout the ceremony, Dr Haikal spoke of his passion for truth, justice, and transparency. He challenged modern readers to look beyond surface narratives, urging them to critically assess political and social developments. His book delves into a variety of historical episodes, reflecting on wars, displacement, and the resilience of communities. It draws parallels between past injustices and present-day challenges, underscoring the importance of civic responsibility and moral clarity.

Notably, Dr Haikal highlighted the role of education in empowering communities to avoid the mistakes of the past. “We must educate for the future,” he said, “by understanding the real causes of conflict, not just their symptoms.”
The launch was more than just a book signing; it was a cultural gathering of minds united by a shared heritage and a desire for a better future. Attendees were also treated to poetry, philosophical reflections, and a heartfelt tribute to Lebanese history and diaspora identity. The event concluded with the presentation of awards and recognition of Dr Haikal’s contributions, followed by a cocktail reception.

Dr Chaiban Haikal’s “My Journey – History and Lessons” is not just a memoir or a history book. It is a call to action for critical thinking, moral courage, and community solidarity. It invites readers—especially those in the Lebanese diaspora—to reconnect with their roots while shaping a wiser, more informed future.
