Arabic version: رئيس الوزراء ينتقد الأحكام المخففة لمغتصبي المراهقين
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has expressed his outrage over a recent court decision that spared three teenage boys from jail time after they were convicted of raping two girls. Describing the case as “appalling,” Starmer emphasized the need for a review of the sentences handed down by a judge at Southampton Crown Court. According to BBC News, the attorney general is set to review the case following public outcry.
The rapes occurred in separate incidents in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, involving two girls, then aged 15 and 14. The boys, then aged 14 and 13 during the attacks, were given Youth Rehabilitation Orders (YROs) instead of custodial sentences. Judge Nicholas Rowland, who presided over the case, stated his intention to avoid “criminalizing these children unnecessarily,” a decision that has drawn widespread criticism.
One of the victims, now 16, described the judge’s decision as a “rock straight in my face,” highlighting her feelings of injustice. She expressed frustration over the perceived leniency of the sentences, which she believes trivializes the severity of the crimes committed against her and her friend. The girls’ families are advocating for harsher penalties for the boys, arguing that the sentences are insufficient for the gravity of the offenses.
Starmer referred to the victim’s testimony as “harrowing and brave,” acknowledging the courage displayed by the girls in the face of such heinous circumstances. He reiterated the importance of justice for victims and their families, stating that the review of the sentences is essential.
The attorney general will have 28 days to decide whether to refer the case to the Court of Appeal, although Cabinet Minister Darren Jones suggests that a quicker decision is likely. He emphasized the need for urgent action to ensure justice for the victims and to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future. The case has sparked a broader discussion about the treatment of sexual offenses in the legal system, with various lawmakers calling for reforms to ensure adequate penalties for such serious crimes.
