Slick Rick, a pioneering figure in hip-hop, is set to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Mobo Awards this Thursday. Known for his smooth storytelling style, Rick’s influence can be seen in the works of numerous artists including Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar. According to BBC News, his 1985 song “La-Di-da-Di” is the most sampled hip-hop track of all time.

Born Ricky Walters in Mitcham, south London, Slick Rick moved to the Bronx at age 11, where he became immersed in the burgeoning hip-hop scene. His unique style, which blends Jamaican intonation with British wit, was developed during his childhood storytelling sessions with family. Performing under names like Rick the Ruler, he quickly gained recognition in the hip-hop community.

Rick’s career took off with the release of his iconic tracks “The Show” and “La-Di-da-Di,” which showcased his creative narrative abilities. Following his signing to Def Jam Records, he released the album “The Great Adventures of Slick Rick,” which included the poignant track “Children’s Story.”

Despite facing challenges, including a prison sentence for attempted murder, Rick’s impact on hip-hop remains significant. He is celebrated for expanding the genre’s lyrical scope, addressing themes of love and social issues in his music. At the Mobo Awards, he will perform some of his greatest hits, continuing to inspire new generations of artists.
