Sumud flotilla enters Gaza ‘danger zone’, braces for possible Israeli attack

The Global Sumud Flotilla on Tuesday entered the area classified as a “danger zone”, where participants expect possible interception by the Israeli navy, Al Jazeera reported.

Organisers said the flotilla is now 200 nautical miles from Gaza’s coast and remains on course despite Israeli threats, with all vessels continuing their journey.

Flight tracking websites showed multiple drones originating from Turkey’s Corlu airbase circling over the flotilla, Reuters news agency reported.

The deputy spokesman for the German foreign ministry, Josef Hinterseher, on Monday said that there is a risk of violent intervention by Israel to stop the international aid flotilla.

The flotilla was attacked by projectiles launched by drones last week, and while anchored in Tunisia on 8 and 9 September. The Tunisian government described the attacks as “premeditated”, but Israel did not take responsibility.

In recent days, Israel has stepped up its threats against the civilian flotilla, accusing organisers, without evidence, of supporting Hamas and of pursuing “a violent course of action”.
