Canterbury Bankstown Mayoral Message
While the cricket has been great this summer, I know many in the community, myself included, have been holding out for the start of the footy season. The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs football club was founded in 1935, thirteen years after a group of locals met above the ‘Ideal Milk Bar’ in Campsie.
You might be interested to hear that the club was nicknamed the “country bumpkins” because of their rural recruiting and their CB emblem.
The Bulldogs have since gone on
to win eight premiership titles, and have boasted many footy legends including Terry Lamb, the Mortimer brothers, George Peponis and Hazem El Masri… just to name a few.
Last year, they were lucky to avoid the wooden spoon, finishing near the bottom of the table. But I have a good feeling about what this footy season has in store for our City’s favourite footy team.
Cameran Ciraldo, a brilliant signing, has already tasted success, coaching his team to their first pre-season victory against the Raiders.
And we’ve got some exciting new recruits this year, whose first stints in blue and white looked promising.Last night, the Bulldogs launched their season at the Belmore Sports Ground, bringing together sponsors, followers and supporters and there was a real buzz and an air of confidence in the new team.
Over the years, the Bulldogs have worked tirelessly in our community… assisting with charities, visiting local schools and acting as role models for the young and upcoming footy stars in our City.
And just recently, we’ve seen them do some incredible work across Australia. They’ve made efforts
to support remote Indigenous communities to make healthy choices, while also donating valuable funds to go towards
training and medical equipment
for RACQ LifeFlight Rescue based
at Bundaberg.
The Bulldogs are doing some
great things and I can’t wait to
see what this season has in store.
Go the doggies!
Yours sincerely,
Clr Khal Asfour
